So, this job I do is kinda strange sometimes, you think that you’ll be drawing monsters and rocketships, and exploding things all the time. Buts thats not always the case. Sometimes you have to draw Leprechauns too, yep, you do. And you have to remember that the client is looking for a great finished piece, even it is only a minor part of something they are doing. And that your being paid to fit within that larger frame work, so you gotta make a piece that fits the bill.

This something I’m learning, that I have to be as motivated to draw a tiny little leprechaun as I am to draw a new comic, or a illustration for band that I know I can rock awesomely. It can be tough, because sometimes you get asked to draw something that honestly, might not be the best fit for me as an illustrator in my opinion. But you gotta put your head down, and your bum up and figure it out.

I also had to design a poster and ticket (among other things) for the event. As a designer I don’t feel I have the same problem, I see every job as a chance to grow, to become a better designer and learn some new skills. I mean thats half the fun right? I’ve just have to learn to apply that to all aspects of what I do, and not be precious about my work. Anyway thats my ramble for the week.

Til Next time!

Cheers,

Luke.

So, its been a while since I last posted, over a month. I’ve been quite busy, with a bunch of things, work mostly, but also I finished pencilling and inking my new comic with Gerard Dwyer, AVC Issue 1. More on that as it develops. Its looking good, still a few miles of work left on it though.

Also though, I’ve been working on a new short comic with Jason Franks, The Renewalist: Ostpitsbergen. This is the second story featuring the character, the first remains unpublished and runs 6 pages. So if you have an anthology and your looking for a 6 page colour comic, you may be in luck! To the right, you can see a panel from the new story, it will be published in The Beginnings Anthology, along work from a bunch of ace Australian talent.

I’ve also done a bunch of illustration gigs lately, so I should be able to post more about them with art soonish. Very proud of some of the work I’ve been producing, a real high watermark for me.

Here’s hoping I can keep a slight more regular blog schedule this year? Why not right, anything is possible?

Cheers Luke!

And its only 5 dollars, and its full colour. Its really a win win situation.

Now Jason is serializing it online at McBlack.com so you can read it for free if your a cheapskate, but what I would do, is read it online, then buy a copy, either online or track Jason down and demand a copy. If your in Melbourne it should easy to track down in any good comic shop.

Also, heres a nice big button to help you find your way if you plan to purchase a copy.

This new truck has been rolling around for a little while now in central Victoria, and I thought it was about time I posted something about it. I did the first truck for them a while back* and due to popular demand they expanded there fleet and I created some new artwork for it, I believe this one lives mostly in and around Castlemaine, so if you in the area drop in for some fantastic indian food. Honestly, the best indian I know off, anywhere. A bold claim I know, but try it and tell me I’m wrong. And if you do try it and don’t agree with me I’ll send you a free comic.

You can find more about the Dbaha resturants and trucks at DHABA.com.au. I also want to briefly mention that the fantastic photo of the van is by Tara Pearce and you can find more of her work here.

* You can see that first truck and read more about it here.

Last Thursday night was the opening of Toronto Draws TinTin exhibition at the Steamwhistle* Brewery here in Toronto. As there was an open submission process there was nothing stopping me from submitting a piece, I choose to recreate a panel from the TinTin book, The Shooting Star, as until I handed in my submission, I was vacant of ideas for something more original, that said it came to together nicely.

If you live in or around Toronto, you can go the see the artwork on display until the 27th November @Steamwhistle Gallery, 255 Bremner Blvd (near the Skydome). If you don’t, you can view some of the entries at the Toronto Draws TinTin website here. Not all the entries are up just yet, but amongst the ones online you can see some great artwork by the likes of Chester Brown, Adrian Alphona, Dalton Sharp, Ethan Rilly, Michael DeForge, Faith Erin Hicks and many others.

There is a follow up event on the 27th details below, get around it:

Gallery Closing & Silent Auction
Featuring the book launch for “The Adventures of Herge” with artist Stanislas in attendance
Sunday November 27th, 7pm-11pm
@ Steamwhistle Gallery, 255 Bremner Boulevard (Near Rogers Centre)
Free to attend

* For those not familiar with Steamwhistle’s beer, its kinda like a classy Vic Bitter.

Its taken be a couple more years than I first expected to get a 24 page comic out there, but its finally happen. I’m pretty proud of my work on it and I want to say a big thank you to the writer and publisher, James Andre and Milkshadow Books.

It something I’m trying to change, but for some reason, I don’t find that aspect of the comic making process easy.

Anyway enough deep thought, I’ve got a comic to show, written by James Andre and possibly published in one of his Yuck books, MILF!(Or Mummy I’d like to find!). Drawn earlier this year, its a story about mummies, real and Egyptian, bad and badder, and a little girl who needs some love.
